Progress Being Made, Wolcott Provides for Area

“Happiness is when you can run warm water over your hands for minutes on end,” remarked an elderly woman staying at Wolcott’s storm shelter at the Senior Center Tuesday morning. Indeed. A dozen residents left the shelter Monday evening when they found out power was restored to the Woodtick and Wolf Hill Rd. neighborhoods that night. Some opted to stay at the shelter to allow their residences a chance to warm up over night first however.

The Shelter was full Monday night for dinner as workers from La Fortuna restaraunt volunteered to cook hamburgers and homefries. “People have been really good – donating eggs and offering food. We keep getting phone calls all day from residents wanting to help out,” says Senior Center director Donna Belval. About 15 residents were in the center just before noon Tuesday, but families have been coming and going to warm up and then head back outside.

High School Opening Could Be Delayed; Community Hurricane Center Still Open

The first day of school is Wednesday, but Wolcott High School students may get one more summer day off. Wolcott School superintendent Joseph Macary has informed the Whisper that power has been out since Hurricane Irene rolled through Connecticut. “We know where the tree branch came down, but it’s just a matter of CL&P of fixing it.” Macary says that a determination of whether or not to open school will be made closer to the opening period tomorrow morning, as the electricity could be restored at almost any time.

Wolcott Prepares For Storm; Sand bags Available

Wolcott’s Mayor and department heads met Thursday morning to review and place the finishing touches on their plan for Hurricane Irene. “We don’t really know what will happen – but we reviewed everything. The Code Red system will be utilized when we need it and will probably put out a message over the weekend. It could be as early as Saturday or sometime on Sunday.” The system will be used if a shelter will be opened. Wolcott has three facilities which can be used for emergency shelters and which ones will be opened will be communicated through the Code Red system. Tyrrell, Frisbie, and Wakelee schools are equiped for that task.
